With the concert project RESONANS, Rostamo-Borregaard Duo wants to convey a collection of musical testimonies from different religious, spiritual or otherwise human existential standpoints. In addition to Sofia Gubaidulina’s “In Croce”, which both conceptually and compositionally illustrates the crucifixion of Jesus, and Jouni Kaipainen’s pantheistically based “Elemental Chanting”, RESONANS presents a brand new commissioned work by Swedish composer Britta Byström, “Epiphanies” referring to sudden revelations of God´s presence in our everyday lives.
The modern compositions are joined in the concert program with meditations by the medieval icon Hildegard von Bingen. In this interaction between both belief systems and centuries, the audience is invited to both enter into resonance with the often powerful expression of the music and to reason about the potential meaning of the compositions in the contemporary society that changes us.
Resonance had its premiere at the Frederiksværk Music Festival in June 2023.
BORREGAARD-ROSTAMO DUO
Rostamo and Borregaard already met as students in the mid-00s in the vibrant Scandinavian environment for classical music. Later, together with Stockholm Syndrome Ensemble (S) and Ensemble Allegria (NO), they initiated a project with the performance of Sofia Gubaidulina’s double concert “Sieben Worte” in Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Connected to the project they had the privilege to collaborate with the composer herself. During this process thoughts of a further duo project were conceived. RESONANS is the first concert program the two musicians present together.
